MICHELLE REDHEAD and Elka de Carteret have failed to get through the second round of auditions for the ITV show, Britain’s Got Talent. But the duo caused a stir with the judges at the filmed sessions and even had music mogul Simon Cowell stick up for them when former newspaper editor Piers Morgan took a cheap shot at their performance and costumes.
After being buzzed out during their performance of How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?, from The Sound of Music, all three judges, which included actress Amanda Holden, agreed they ‘didn’t really get it’ but Mr Morgan went one step further, telling them, ‘the only good thing about nuns is when they take their clothes off’.
Michelle told him there was no way they were going to do that, only for Mr Cowell to hit out at his fellow judge for proposing such a thing.
‘So are you saying you want to see these two students without their clothes on?’
Michelle said it was good to have Mr Cowell on their side and admitted the whole experience had been terrific, even if they had been rushed on stage.
‘We were unlucky because we were in the last half-an-hour of the show and they were running out of time.
‘Ant and Dec had to leave and they were buzzing everyone off really quickly.’
The pair had also had to endure a long day waiting around.
‘We had to get there for about 12.30pm and we didn’t get on until 7. It was a long day and we had to wait around in a little room for ages. They actually called us through to the stage quite early and had us mic up to go on third in the first part of the show, but then they changed their mind and told us we were going on in the second half. And it ended up we were right at the end,’ said Michelle.
‘The judges said they didn’t really get our performance, but we told them they would have if they had let us carry on for a little longer.
‘In a way we’re happier they said that, though, than say we weren’t very good.’
But Grammar School students Michelle, 18, and Elka, 16, both made sure they made the most of their opportunity by popping up in front of TV cameras as much as possible.
They got interviewed twice by ITV2 and once by ITV1 film crews.
‘If we are going to be on the show, then I think it will be on ITV2 on the Britain’s Got More Talent programme.
‘We had an amazing time and met some really cool people as well as some really random ones. You see it on TV and you don’t think it’s actually real, but then you’re there in front of the judges. It’s pretty cool.’
An audience of about 2,000 watched the show in Manchester, where acts had to perform for two minutes without the judges pushing their red ‘buzz’ button, which they hit if bored by the act.
