LE MONT SAINT SUBARU exacted revenge over Collins Stewart Inferno at Beau Sejour on Friday night to take the top spot in the Yorkshire Guernsey Men’s Division One. ‘Wow - it wasn’t pretty, but I was very pleased with our defence,’ said Subaru’s player-coach Pete Beausire.
‘We’ve been working hard on that for the last two weeks. We came in with a game plan to shut out Jason Hooper and it seemed to work.
‘I’m very happy to be at the top of table, especially having lost to this team in the first game of the season. It’s now the busy time of the season.
‘We’ve got games every other week.’
Subaru’s crushing victory came on the back of very good defence.
Inferno had a lot of huff and puff, but not much in the way of an end result as they continuously went for jump shots when they could not find any way into the basket for lay ups, due to a wall of Subaru bodies.
At the other end of the court, Subaru forward Mark Barnett showed his class to top score with 25 points.
‘It was a strange game but a good win,’ said the former London Towers player, Barnett.
‘We played well from the first quarter instead of trying to catch up.’
The match was tetchy as the Inferno players particularly got on the case of female umpire Jo Bellis. This was unfair as Bellis did not have such a bad game to warrant the amount of stick that she received.
Inferno’s coach Adam Farish was clearly very disappointed with his team at the end of the match and he kept them behind at the end for a 10-minutegrilling.
Many at the start of the season had reckoned that they would be the ones to watch.
But only Lee Ogier, who came away with 19 points, and Liam Smyth, who had got 10 of his team’s first 12, covered themselves in any glory.
They were also the only two in the team who provided any real movement during the game.
‘I’ll keep this short,’ said Farish about Subaru.
‘They wanted it more than us. They were more disciplined than us. They were better than us.’
