It’s all Cobblers for professional hopeful

TEENAGE Guernsey footballer Kieran Mahon has secured a trial with professional League One side Northampton Town. The 16-year-old goes out on a loan deal next week and if he makes an instant impression he could even be in contention for a place in the Cobblers first-team squad against Swindon Town next weekend.

He is one of only two footballcv academy players to be offered a trial with a professional club. The other is his room-mate Alistair Wiltshire, who has been invited to train with Scunthorpe United.

‘Kieran thinks it is a great opportunity to try to step up to another level and is really happy that his first trial is with Northampton Town,’ said his mother Saran.

The club has a rich history dating back to 1897 and play at Sixfields stadium.

‘He has been told to go out there and enjoy his football and if it does not work this time, there will be other opportunities with other clubs. He will give a hard week’s training and hopes to be chosen for Saturday’s game, but won’t know until a couple of days before if he is successful,’ she added.

‘He is thrilled to be one of the first two to go out on loan and will go there and give 100%. He has put a lot of hard work in since starting in September and being chosen shows that it is starting to pay off.’

It is thought that Premier League side Aston Villa and professional clubs Leicester City, Stoke City and MK Dons have all shown an interest in the progress of the Guernsey youngster and North player.

Former Northern Ireland international Kevin Wilson, manager of the footballcv academy, called his parents this week to deliver the good news.

Wilson used to be the Northampton manager and guided them to promotion to the first division in the 1999-2000 season.

Mahon has already had trials with the England under-19 side in Nottingham earlier this season - despite only being 16.

The loan deal could take him another step closer to realising his dream of becoming a professional footballer - getting a contract and playing internationally for the Republic of Ireland.
