Broken back - but Cox will risk it again

MARC COX says he will tackle again the jump that broke his back. The 20-year-old motocross star was leading the 2007 MX2 championship in October when the accident happened.

He has just returned to work on a part-time basis at the police garage where he is an apprentice mechanic.

He has been told that he will have to miss the entire 2008 season, which kicks off on Saturday.

But the incident has not put him off moto-cross and he says he will attempt the same jump when he is back on his bike in a year’s time.

‘They’ve done a lot of changes so it should be safer to do it,’ he said.

‘Nothing as serious as this has happened in Guernsey before.’

The incident occurred in the ‘valley’ section of the Pleinmont Point course when Cox went for an audacious jump from the top ledge of an obstacle and miss out the middle section to land on the lower part, more than 30ft away.

However, either a freak gust of wind or an awkward take-off forced his bike out to the side and resulted in Cox landing very badly on the earth.

‘It all happened very quickly,’ he said.

He was taken by ambulance to hospital where he spent three days before he was transferred for a week-and-a-half to a specialist unit in Exeter where it was confirmed he had broken two vertebrates.

Fortunately, Cox did not require an operation.
