Deputy Jones: Let public see runway plans

PROPOSALS for remedial work at Guernsey Airport should be shown to the public, said Deputy Dave Jones, yesterday. He said people were asking the same questions he had, prior to seeing a presentation given to States members and he thought others should be given the same opportunity.

But Public Services Department minister Deputy Bill Bell said a public presentation would not take place until after the election.

‘At present, we are talking about a draft report which has to go to the Civil Aviation Authority for its comments,’ he said.

‘It won’t be back until after the election, by which time it will be a matter for the new department.’

Deputy Jones said that while he accepted Deputy Bell’s view, he did not necessarily agree with it. ‘The presentation we had answered a lot of questions which I and other members of the States had. It answered the broader questions as to how we find ourselves in the position where significantly more expenditure is needed than originally thought, he said.

‘It could be of benefit if the same information we had was given to others to help them understand, providing that there was a health warning to say that the information and level of expenditure was subject to CAA approval.’

Before Christmas, Public Services indicated work on the runway, aprons and taxiways was expected to cost about £10m. But a report from consultants RPS Burks Green suggested it would be closer to £50m, and £75m. if the runway was to be extended.

‘The sooner the proposals get into the public domain the better,’ said Deputy Jones.

‘Then at least there will be a level of understanding.’
