Post staff face £5m. efficiency ‘crunch’

GUERNSEY Post staff will learn more about the future of the business tomorrow at what has been termed a crunch meeting. The utility has invited all its workforce to Beau Sejour at 7pm to discuss how it is to save £5m. over a three-year period.

‘It’s to talk about the future of the business and the way the regulator’s cap on the price increase will affect it over the next few years,’ said George Jennings, branch secretary of the Communication Workers’ Union.

Sources claimed they had heard from postal staff late last week that employees could be made redundant.

‘As far as I’m aware nobody has been sacked. We have had no such proposals issued to us as yet,’ said Mr Jennings.

‘As part of business efficiency we will be looking at all possible outcomes, but we have had no proposals to lay anybody off. We will handle negotiations in the normal way.’

There are 232 CWU members in Guernsey, Alderney and Sark - both postal and counter staff.

Guernsey Post has about 300 employees.

‘I would expect there to be about 230 staff members there,’ said Mr Jennings.

A full media briefing on the company’s strategy is being held tomorrow.

It is understood the meeting will include details about the company’s trading position and the proposed tariff.

Guernsey Post chief executive Gordon Steele said after a typically busy Christmas period it was the right time to get staff together to talk about its business strategy for 2008.

‘This is a great opportunity for everyone across our business to share their thoughts and find out more about our plans for the future,’ he said.

The union committee and national representatives will also be present.

Brian Scott, assistant national secretary of the Communication Managers’ Association, and Lionel Sampson, Communication Workers’ Union national officer for Guernsey, will both speak at the meeting alongside Guernsey Post executives.

* The need for savings was identified in 2006 by the Office of Utility Regulation following a cost review by Brockley Consulting Ltd.
