AN ONLINE subscription service offering access to electronic editions of the Guernsey Press and an archive is now available. Subscribers will have easy access to full, searchable electronic editions of the complete newspaper dating back to February 2006.
The archive will grow, with the latest edition of the newspaper being added every day.
The service is aimed primarily at businesses and other organisations that will now be able to use their computer to find the reference they need, rather than keeping piles of newspapers and cuttings.
Editor Richard Digard said: ‘This is a major step forward in the development of our electronic publishing activities, which we believe will have great appeal to businesses, organisations and individuals, both around the world and in Guernsey.’
A second new online option will offer readers the chance to subscribe to a full week’s electronic editions.
Both are developments of the current pioneer scheme, launched off-island two years ago, which offers one day’s edition at a time.
The service is based on iViewer software pioneered by the Guernsey Press’s associate company, Press Computer Systems.
The iViewer subscription software allows readers to ‘turn’ pages online, much as with the printed version, and also to zoom in and print articles.
Names and key words can be used in the search facility to find references rapidly.
Users can click on highlighted websites and email addresses in stories and in advertisements to be connected to the sites or send emails.
The Guernsey Press will also continue to publish selections from its news, business, sport information and advertising pages on thisisguernsey.com.
John Varcoe, general manager of associated publishers MSP, said: ‘This is a new and improved way of delivering the newspaper. If you subscribe, you will be able to log on anywhere in the world, which is an exciting development for us.’
