Woman, 77, dies as car and lorry collide

AN ELDERLY woman was killed when a builder’s truck and a car collided yesterday lunchtime. The 77-year-old died at the scene, Les Rouvets Road, Vale, despite being treated by a passing paramedic.

The driver of the silver Hyundai involved, an 82-year-old man, remains in hospital with serious injuries.

The truck driver was treated at the scene for shock.

Emergency services were called at noon and the road remained closed while police investigated.

Officers are today checking the possibility that the lorry’s sideboard swung open as the small hatchback was passing.

It appears that the metal sideboard ripped off a door from the driver’s side of the car.

‘It’s just so awful when something like this happens - so truly awful,’ said one resident, who asked not to be named.

‘There is quite a nasty bend along here and it can be dangerous if traffic takes it wide. I’ve got to be careful when pulling out of my drive, I always double-check.’

She hurried outside after hearing the crash.

The car appears to have been travelling north and the truck, owned by Rihoy and Son, was driving in the opposite direction.

After the impact, the lorry’s right-hand sideboard was hanging open with what appeared to be a car door underneath.

Fire and Rescue Service staff cut the man and woman from the car.

A bystander said that the woman, who was in the back seat, was removed first but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police would like to speak to anyone who may either have witnessed the accident or seen either of the vehicles in the area.

They are also keen to speak to the driver of a lorry with a white cab, who may have been following the Hyundai shortly before the collision. The road has now reopened.
