THE elderly woman killed in a car crash on Wednesday has been named as Jacqueline Adkins. The 77-year-old was the passenger in a silver Hyundai that collided with a truck in Les Rouvets Road, Vale.
Emergency services were called to the incident at noon and Mrs Adkins was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver was her husband, 82-year-old Laurence, who is in a serious but stable condition in intensive care.
The truck driver was treated for shock, but was not taken to hospital.
‘It would be speculation to comment on what happened at this point. We are still investigating the accident. One car is being examined and we are still interviewing witnesses and building up a picture,’ said Detective Inspector Ashley Nicholas, who is heading the investigation.
The Hyundai appeared to have been travelling north, towards the Camp du Roi area, and the truck, owned by J. W. Rihoy and Son, was going the opposite way.
After the collision, the lorry’s right-hand sideboard was hanging open and a door from the driver’s side of the Hyundai was caught underneath it.
The Fire & Rescue Service had to cut Mr and Mrs Adkins from their vehicle. Mrs Adkins, who witnesses say was in the back, was taken out first.
The road remained closed for the rest of the day.
Police have received a good response from witnesses who have been able to help with their enquiries.
‘It seems that whenever we ask, the public are always willing to come forward. But we do urge anyone who has not come forward to do so, it could help us fill in another piece of the puzzle,’ said DI Nicholas.
n Police are still keen to hear from the driver of a truck with a white cab which a witness reported seeing behind the car at some point along Les Rouvets Road.
Also they wish to identify a man, believed to be in his 60s with short dark hair, seen driving alone in a dark green vehicle and the two young male occupants of a white van.
Both vehicles were being driven along Les Rouvets in the direction of Rue Mangy a short time before the incident.
