News from the Guernsey Press

Live organisers keep improving

The organisation of Jersey Live has improved considerably over the years, according to the chief executive of the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society. James Godfrey delivered his endorsement as a Guernsey politician questioned Culture and Leisure’s grounds for refusing a similar event here and its commitment to the arts.

‘While we have been lucky with the weather generally speaking, one year when it had been quite wet the organisers did bring temporary surfacing in for the trucks to use when setting up the stage and lighting,’ said Mr Godfrey.

‘But within a week to a fortnight of them having been here you wouldn’t even know there had been a festival.’

And Mr Godfrey said that there had been less trouble following Jersey Live events than there had been from parties of 100 people.

‘I can’t fault the organisers in any way at all,’ he said.

St Sampson’s deputy Sam Maindonald strongly supported a festival taking place at the Victoria Avenue site.

‘I don’t necessarily agree that it is just about cricket,’ she said.

‘The fact is, we don’t have enough live music here in Guernsey. What about the people who support the arts? You can’t just put forward a sporting argument.

I would have thought that Victoria Avenue would have been the perfect location. It’s easily accessible.’

Deputy Maindonald said that she had to question what Culture and Leisure was doing refusing the application on the grounds that it had.

‘They’re talking about the appointment of an arts coordinator and then they go and prevent an important

arts event like this from happening.’
