GUERNSEY’S junior fencers headed to Budapest at the weekend to train with one of the best coaches in the business. Peter Frohlich is the Hungarian sabre coach and next week he will put more than 20 local young swordsmen and women through their paces at the picturesque Honved Club in the country’s capital.
The Hungarian approach to coaching is the way adopted by most coaches.
‘It’s going to be an experience for the kids,’ said Elizabeth College’s master in charge of fencing and Sarnian Sword Club coach Rob Harnish.
Honved has an enviable record in training world and Olympic champions.
The Sarnians will train for three hours in the morning, which will include fitness, footwork and individual lessons and pairs exercises. They will then have a four-hour break for tourist activities before beginning the afternoon sessions, which involve three hours competitive bout practice against their Hungarian colleagues.
Harnish said the trip would provide valuable experience that would be impossible to offer in the island.
In addition, the local fencers will have an opportunity to train with the Hungarian junior squad.
At the beginning of the visit, they will also attend an international sabre competition to get a sense of what is happening at the top level.
