GUERNSEY is trying to become exempt from a 90-day- stay rule that threatens to put local residents into the UK taxation net.
Chief Minister Mike Torode was in Westminster yesterday discussing how the UK Government’s alterations to what counts as a 90-day stay in the country could affect local people.
Anyone who spends 90 days or more in the UK can be subject to UK taxes.
Previously, the arrival and departure dates were never counted in the total number of days a person spent in the UK, but from April they will be.
This could affect people travelling to and via the UK on business or leisure. It could also affect anyone who frequently visits the UK for medical treatment.
‘This is wholly unsatisfactory,’ said Deputy Torode.
‘Anyone close to the 90-day limit now might end up being put into the UK taxation net. ‘We will be asking the government to consider anyone from the Channel Islands with legitimate reasons to be excluded.’
Deputy Torode said the UK Government was open to consultation and negotiations will continue.
