THE flexible interaction between special needs and mainstream pupils will be one of the biggest achievements of St Sampson’s High and Le Murier.

According to Education’s project planning manager Geraint Ap Sion, the schools’ shared facilities will allow pupils to integrate as much or as little as necessary. ‘Although Le Murier is a stand-alone school, pupils from either school have access to the other and they have shared areas and shared facilities. Pupils will pass each other every day and there’ll be a lot of interaction between the two, which, of course, is a good thing,’ said Mr Ap Sion.

The schools, which are on schedule for opening in September, both occupy the Les Nicolles site and are physically joined, but with separate entrances.

Shared facilities, including a sports hall, 25-metre indoor swimming pool and a dance and gym studio, are located between the schools.

Mr Ap Sion said the project, which marked the first phase of the department’s development plan, would bring secondary education for both special needs and mainstream pupils up to date and the facilities would be on a par with the most modern UK schools.

He said there had been no major problems with the construction work and it was hoped power would be installed by the end of the month, with a view to starting to move in equipment towards the end of March.

He said there were a few unsolved issues regarding traffic from both Les Effards and Baubigny, which Environment was working on at present. ‘I’ve been living this project for two years now and made every little decision on it. Now I’m just really looking forward to the kids arriving here and seeing what they make of it.’
