LE MONT SAINT Subaru got the better of their club-mates Fiat last night at Beau Sejour to go level with Collins Stewart at the top of Division One.
Subaru had two games in hand over their rivals and both were against Fiat, the first of which on Friday saw them win by nine points, 71-62.
But it was certainly an easier affair for them yesterday evening as they strolled home victors by 21 points.
It means that they join Collins Stewart on 15 points in the league with both having played eight matches.
‘I’m very pleased to be joint top now,’ said Subaru player-coach Pete Beausire.
‘Winning our games in hand has relieved some pressure because before this game it was down to us to make a mistake. But winning this has put us back in contention.
‘We’re looking forward to playing Collins Stewart on 14 March. We’re playing better and better as a team.’
However, it was Fiat who got off to a brighter start with Ben Colley outstanding.
It was the former La Fraternelle player’s first game in 18 months and he did not show any signs of rustiness.
Luke Sheehan was also handy in the initial stages.
But by the end of the opening quarter, Subaru had got into a rhythm and were leading 18-14.
It was of the same in the second quarter as Subaru’s two island stars Jan Renouf and Beausire’s younger brother Mike at centre called the shots.
Going into the final quarter, Subaru found themselves 63-47 up.
The highlight of the match came in the final 10 minutes when point guard Rachid Frimat hit a rare three-pointer, much to the delight of himself and the Subaru bench.
But that was matched by Fiat’s Nick Leale who hit one straight off the bat when the play went down to the other end.
Leale finished the match as his side’s top scorer with 18 points while Mike Beasuire was the leading scorer in the match with 28 as Renouf weighed in with 25.
‘I thought Jan was outstanding and he definitely had his best game of the season,’ said Pete Beausire.
It has been a long season for Fiat who have been hit by injuries to players such as Nick Lawlor, Dan Harradine, Paul Battle and Richard Davey and the disappointment of another defeat was etched all over their player-coach James Tracey’s face afterwards.
‘Most of our games are competitive whereas that was disappointing tonight,’ said the New Zealander.
‘It would have been completely different if we had a team who hadn’t been decimated by injuries.’
