I'd call GSPCA or animal aid and report the owners of the dog for neglect.

You have as much right to let your animals roam free as anyone else.......dogs need to be supervised and if they cant be bothered and leave dog on its own then its a reportable offence....

Don't feel hate for the dogs. It's the owners that are responsible but many people these days have few morals when it comes to animals.

I know someone who thinks cat owners should be prosecuted for cats mess in gardens. cats are independent but dogs need to be supervised (ie licenses) and not left for hours alone or let loose because owners cant be bothered to walk them

Opening my backdoor earlier today i was horrified to see my neighbours dog in my garden with my pet chicken in its mouth. This has not been the 1st time and have now gone through the process of reporting it to everyone possible.

As you say the police will not do anything as it is a civil case but you can still report it to your local dog warden and the RSPCA and they were all very helpful to me. Unfortunatly the neighbours werent to happy when we told them it had been reported and a little while ago I had a nasty, angry neighbour on my door threatening and shouting at me. In a way that was a good thing as the second time I called the police they had to help and the neighbours have now been warned and told to secure there fence better.

Previous to this we have had the dog clear out my shed at the end of the garden of all my baby chicks Id hatched myself...heartbroken as you can imagine. Oh how I wish id reported it back then. The other week the dog got in again and the neighbour just trotted round without permission and run round our garden tryin to catch it then today...again the dog there. The neighbour thinks Im to blame for having them free range. How selfish. Why should my animals be locked up all day whilst there dog roams where it pleases?? I dont think so.

My chickens never leave our garden but since the dog incident today two have scarpered and Ive searched the whole village looking for them but I think they are too scared to come home. Any1 any ideas on how to find them? Ive asked all the neighbours to keep an eyeout but dont know what else to do. Only have 1 left now out of all my beautiful flock but she is now very lonely. Any help much apprieciated.

I feel so hateful towards dogs now but know it is not there fault, it is the responsibility of the owners to make sure they are secure.

An appropiate fence or prickly hedging might be a good move?

Today, to my horror and my 5 year old daughter's. A dog jumped over our garden wall and savaged one of our pet chickens who has happily roamed free for the last 12 months without incident. We live in a small valley in the cotswolds and most gardens have chickens... the offending dog belongs to a family who are staying at a holiday let cottage at the end of our garden. They arrived last night, they let one dog out.. lost it.. then proceeded to scream its name (the dogs deaf)! up and down the little narrow path which surrounds our garden at 2am and entered our land, without asking to scream for the dog.... I even went out in my pyjamas, slippers and torch to help look for the dog... So this morning when it still hadn't been found they deceided to let the spaniel run havoc up and down the path (the dog was with 2 young children) where it jumped into our garden and killed our beloved hen. The police say that they understand my comments that if my daughter was in the garden cuddling the chicken (as she does often) would the dog still have attacked.. my daughter, if she had have been in the garden would have rushed to help her pet... would the dog stop attacking? or would she be caught in the crossfire? according to the police that is "what if" and it is up to us to build a higher wall.... We live in a 400 year old cottage surrounded by a 3 acre garden which has a dry stone wall going round the property. what more can we do. Surley they have a responsibility to keep the dog on a lead. Since we have had the chickens about 60+ dogs have used the same path every day and none have entered our garden....
I am disgusted that there is nothing we can do and I am even more disgusted that people who come here for a holiday have no respect either for the countryside or the people who live here. I am furious and I can't believe the police saying "what can we do about it" and they can't reverse the situation........
