HEATHER WATSON helped Great Britain finish seventh in the Tennis Europe Winter Cup at the weekend.
The 15-year-old Sarnian was one of a three-strong team, with Tara Moore and Nicola George, who were in action in Ronchin, France, at the girls’ under-16s finals.
They were drawn to play fourth seeds Italy on Friday when Watson, who was playing after recovering from a stomach injury, went down in the opening singles 6-3, 6-2 to Nastassja Burnett, who was to remain unbeaten over the three days.
Moore levelled the match by winning her singles rubber in three sets, but she and George were just edged out in the deciding doubles to be denied a semi-final place.
Italy went on to beat the hosts the following day before losing the final 2-1 to the Czech Republic.
On Saturday, Watson gave GB the ideal start to their play-off match with Hungary, defeating Zsofia Miko 6-3, 6-0 in the opening singles rubber.
Timea Babos evened things up with a three-set victory over Moore and then joined forces with Miko to overcome Moore and Watson in the doubles 6-2, 7-6.
The British trio finished on a high yesterday, though, with victory over Bulgaria in the seventh-place play-off.
Watson sealed the win as she took her singles rubber against Aleksandra Mitrovska 7-6, 6-3 after George had won the opener.
Moore and George teamed up to complete a 3-0 whitewash in the doubles.
