THE Guernsey Vets retained the Commodore Ferries Cup with a fine 2-0 win over the Royal Navy Vets at Blanche Pierre Lane.
With a slight wind behind them, the hosts got off to a flying start with a brilliantly executed goal from Lee Gallienne. The move started down the right with Darren Le Tissier finding Luke Allen, whose cross was side volleyed into the roof of the net from eight yards by Gallienne.
Two minutes later Paul Philp broke through the heart of the Navy defence only to see his shot drift wide with only the keeper to beat.
Guernsey continued to dominate with Robbie Dover and Mark Coutanche working well down the left but with a bumpy surface, good chances were hard to come by. On the half-hour mark, Martin Gauvain slid a well executed free kick through to Le Tissier, which again went narrowly wide.
Paul Garrard was a virtual spectator in the Guernsey goal as the back four of Stephen Woodhead, Shaun Staples, Michael de la Haye and Coutanche were neat and tidy in their play. That allowed them time to support their midfield and push for a second goal.
Four subs were introduced for the second half and once again Guernsey started brightly, Ian Powell going closest on two occasions.
Some slack marking by the Guernsey defence allowed the Navy to break through and only a fingertip save by John Le Cheminant saw the ball around his left-hand post.
An excellent diagonal ball from Gauvain picked out Coutanche in space and the resultant shot from Neil Fitchet was well saved.
With Luke Allen dominating midfield and the excellent runs from Le Tissier, Gallienne and Fitchet, it was not long before the next goal came.
Allen spotted the opening as the Navy allowed him space and he drove in an excellent shot to the left of the keeper from 25 yards.
With captain Shaun Staples marshalling the defence, Guernsey Vets camped in the Navy half for the last 10 minutes and only desperate defending kept the score to 2-0.
