A WEEK today Bels could be crowned Priaulx champions after this dire goalless draw last night.
If Bels win on Saturday at Rovers and again when they take on Rec at the Track next Wednesday night, then they will regain the trophy that they won the season before last. It was the same old problem for St Martin’s at the Corbet Field – they just could not find the back of the net.
‘I’m disappointed with the draw and I’m really disappointed with the quality in the last third, but unfortunately that’s testament to our season,’ said Saints boss Colin Fallaize.
Lifeless, boring, flat – those are just a few adjectives that could be used to describe the football on offer.
In fact, it would have probably been more exciting to have spent the 90 minutes sat in the recently refurbished Corbet Field changing rooms watching the paint dry.
In the first 10 minutes a rare defensive error by Saints captain Kevin Graham allowed Lee Ogier through, but the Rec striker wasted his opportunity.
At the other end in the lead up to half-time, Dom Heaume could have put the visitors ahead but again the chance was wasted.
The second half started sprightlier as Liam Davey, who had come on for Heaume who was off with a hamstring problem, was on the receiving end of a low cross from Chris Chamberlain that had been dummied by Ben Coulter, but the fireman proceeded to blast it over the bar.
The match returned to the mire.
The only time Rec threatened was in the last five minutes when Graham had put himself up front to try and make something happen and Rec centre forward Jamie Gauvain was given the ball in the resulting time and space.
But in keeping with what had gone on beforehand – he messed it up.
Rec coach Johnny Reid was happy at the end though.
‘The confidence is back,’ he said.
‘In the changing room you can see it. I’m pleased for the lads.
‘It’s been a difficult season.’
It is too painful to give player ratings.
