DALE GARLAND was yesterday named in the Great Britain squad for the world indoor championships – subject to fitness.
And the Guernsey star was as surprised as anyone, having been laid low by injury for virtually a month and only last week been told, by his coach Malcolm Arnold, to forget about the remainder of the indoor season.
Garland is one of six named for the 4 x 400m relay squad and, given his pedigree, he must stand a good chance of appearing in the three-day event in Valencia.
‘Malcolm has agreed to it, which is good,’ said the runner, who remains ranked four in the country for the 400m, despite only one meaningful indoor race this year.
Garland said that the call from UK Athletics had come on Monday afternoon even though his coach had told the selectors not to consider the Sarnian for selection.
‘He had a change of heart and said I could go. He had wanted to take the pressure off me and stop me chasing a time.’
