Draw your inspiration from history

ALDERNEY children have a month to come up with a design which will go down in island history.

This year is the 60th anniversary of Alderney Week since the war and the organisers are planning the biggest event yet.

As with the previous three years, they are inviting the island’s youth to design a logo for the event, which will appear on posters and programmes.

Anyone under the age of 18 can enter a design to represent this year’s theme, Pure Magic.

‘We want the best ever logo and mascot.

It’s got to be really eye-catching. Alderney Week 2008 is all about magic, wizards, fairies, elves, magical creatures and amazing things and somehow the logo should also feature the magic figure of 60,’ explained Alderney Week team member Ilona Soane-Sands.

Locals and visitors can expect big things: ‘This will be our most important Alderney Week for a long time,’ said Ilona.

There is always a strong field of designs for the competition although some entrants are so keen to win they end up bending the rules.

Ilona warned: ‘This year’s logo has got to be creative and original and we won’t consider designs which have simply been downloaded from the internet or cut-and-paste ClipArt cartoons. It must be your very own creation and we know you can do it.’

In the previous three years the winning entries and mascots were Clarice the Crooning Cod, followed by SuperPuffin and last summer’s glamorous Marilyn.

Anyone entering should ensure the logo is a maximum size of 15cm x 15cm and uses no more than three colours.

The winning design will feature on the programme as well as on T-shirts, baseball caps, posters and any other promotional material.

There will be an excellent first prize and also rewards for 10 runners-up.

Competition details and entry forms are available from the Alderney Centre, Victoria Street, St Anne’s School and Ormer House.

The closing date for the competition is Monday 31 March at 5pm.

Winners will be announced on 12 April.

The new head teacher of St Anne’s School has invited local people to become Friends of St Anne’s.

He hopes people in the island would be able, through their different areas of interest, to help the school.

‘Alderney residents have massive expertise. What I’m trying to do is to create a sort of register of talent,’ said new head Mike Gaunt.

He added it could benefit the island’s youth in the future.

‘If there are people who have a skill or ability that we might one day use, I’d like to know and we can compile a database of expertise. We’d call these good people Friends of St Anne’s and we could call upon them as and when their particular talent was needed,’ he said.

The invitation has already been issued to parents via the school’s newsletter and Mr Gaunt is now opening the idea to the whole island.

Anyone interested in offering their skill, time or talent for the benefit of the pupils at St Anne’s can ring the school on 822173.
