SIR TREVOR BROOKING is to attend the Deloitte Corbet Cup final.
The former England star is the FA director of football development and has been invited to the island by the GFA director for youth and football development, Chris Schofield.
‘Following England’s failure to qualify for Euro 2008, the national press heralded the 9 v. 9, three-quarter-size pitch format as the way to bridge the transition from mini soccer to the 11 v. 11 adult game,’ said Schofield. ‘In Guernsey we are now in our third season in this format and I invited Sir Trevor to see at first hand the quality of football it can produce.’
‘Having explained what we are trying to achieve through our development programme, I was quite naturally thrilled when he accepted the invitation.’
The West Ham legend will arrive in the late morning of Tuesday 22 April and the GFA development team are currently putting together an itinerary for him. It will centre on local delivery of a number of key FA development areas.
That will involve a visit to one of the island’s FA charter standard clubs to see how they are actively developing facilities to improve their mini soccer and small-sided activities, a visit to see the developing girls’ football school and the Corbet Cup final in the evening.
It is also anticipated that one of the FA specialist 5-11 age-group coaches will deliver a skills coaching session immediately prior to the game.
‘Sir Trevor’s visit is a strong endorsement from the FA of the work carried out by the Guernsey Football Association to encourage player development,’ said GFA president David Nussbaumer.
‘This is a huge coup for Guernsey and reflects the hard work of the association and its member clubs.’
