STAFF who will lose their jobs when Simco closes will provide a pool of skills for other businesses to dip into, according to the deputy Commerce and Employment minister.
Carla McNulty Bauer said news of the closure was very disappointing. ‘My concerns are obviously with the staff who will be affected and their families because it opens up a period of uncertainty,’ she said.
‘As government we should not interfere, but as Commerce and Employment we will watch and provide assistance wherever we can.’
‘Currently, we are hearing from many sectors of the business community that there is a significant shortage of labour and we now have a pool of people coming into the job market.’
Deputy McNulty Bauer said she was confident most employees would find other work and there were a number of possibilities for the site at Braye Road Industrial Estate.
‘If the site is to become available, there is an opportunity for it to be taken over by a local business with local shareholders,’ she said.
‘We would encourage more diversification of industry.’
Ron Le Cras, regional officer for the Transport and General Workers’ Union, confirmed that no Simco workers were members. ‘It’s a shame because those are exactly the sort of people who should be in the union,’ he said.
‘It’s extremely unfortunate that a business would leave Guernsey when Guernsey is supposed to be encouraging industry.’
