Once a regular fixture on the island’s live music circuit, local band The Johndoes are making a return. (0543387)

THE JOHNDOES are back after a six-year hiatus.

The group were a common sight on the local music scene in the 90s and recorded two CDs, Body and Sole and A World Full of Strangers, the latter of which was mastered at legendary studio Abbey Road.

Long-term members guitarist and vocalist Grant Mellor, drummer Darran James and David Kershaw on keyboards are joined by former Johndoes Mark Helyar and Matt Keyho.

The group played a comeback gig at Pieces on 28 December and continue the relaunch with a gig at the Venture Inn next Saturday. Although the set list will including some original tracks from the two CDs, the band have updated their selection of cover versions to include a diverse range of songs, including material by artists such as The Police, The Cure, Foo Fighters and Manic Street Preachers.

This year, The Johndoes aim to re-establish themselves on the local live-music scene and have a number of gigs booked over the coming months.

‘There’s also a renewed energy to write new material and the band is already rehearsing a number of new originals,’ said singer Grant.

‘It’s great that the band is back together. Completely revamping our set list has really rejuvenated our sound – it still feels like the same classic Johndoes sound but with a rougher edge,’ he said.

‘The December gig at Pieces was really well received and we can’t wait to get going again at the Venture on Saturday.’

A night bus has been arranged to take people into Town after the gig.
