Andy turns it around in Brazil

THE world champion again showed just what he is made of on the opening day of the 2008 World Touring Car Championship in Curitiba.

From a disappointing 12th in qualifying, Andy Priaulx came away from the Brazilian rounds with 13 points, just one off the championship lead.

The Sarnian climbed to fifth place in the opening race won by Frenchman Yvan Muller and from fourth spot on the reversed grid for race two, Priaulx drove brilliantly to finish runner-up to Italian Gabriele Tarquini. While Seat cars won both races and dominated qualifying, the three-times champion showed daring and no shortage of skill to rescue what threatened to be a disastrous start to the campaign.

After the crowds had gone home there was a further boost for Priaulx with the news that he had been elevated to fourth in the opening race after the belated disqualification of big rival, Augusto Farfus, on a technical breach.

Farfus had placed third on the track, but stewards spotted his ‘V’ support for the fixation of the engine protection had not complied with the regulations.
