Business from the Guernsey Press

Boot camp is training first

DEVELOPMENT of staff is at the heart of Financial Risk Management’s boot camp programme.

The function of the week-long intensive course is to ensure all employees understand what the company does and how it operates.

It provides employees with the opportunity to build and nurture contacts with different departments and to meet senior staff and to do so in an environment outside  their day-to-day role.

Head of investor relations and boot camp co-ordinator Alison Smith said the business’s continued success depended on the calibre of its employees and their dedication.

‘We are committed to providing our staff with effective learning and development opportunities and our boot camp is an example of this,’ she said.

‘The course aims to give all employees the opportunity to develop a basic understanding of both the hedge-fund industry and the core functions of our business.

‘We believe that ensuring a common level of understanding across the company helps us to maintain a shared culture in all offices as well as to foster staff commitment to the wider business goals.’

This philosophy seems to be working as FRM made the final three shortlisted at this year’s Awards for Achievement Excellence in Training Award.

Guernsey head of human resources Hayley Gaudion said that as the industry is complex, the company needed highly skilled staff.

‘We recognise that our people are our most critical asset and their development is paramount to our success as a business,’ she said.

‘We were extremely proud to reach the finals,’ said Ms Gaudion.

‘The awards are an excellent way to celebrate those who make an important contribution to the island.

‘However. we have no intention of resting on our laurels. We are always trying to be one step ahead and monitor our training programmes by obtaining feedback from those that go through them’.
