SHOPPERS will have to pay 5p for a plastic bag at supermarkets from May.
At a meeting in Jersey yesterday, an agreement was reached on the Channel Island-wide initiative aimed at reducing their use – currently over 10 million bags a year in Guernsey alone.
Backed by both Environment departments, all major food retailers have agreed to introduce the charge from 6 May, with the money raised going to island charities. Speaking from Jersey yesterday afternoon, Environment minister David De Lisle said it was a great day.

I was disgusted this morning to hear the number of complaints about this on islandfm - it’s 5 PENCE not exactly bank breaking yet the moaning was unbelievable.
