Plastic bags to cost 5p

0540421.jpgSHOPPERS will have to pay 5p for a plastic bag at supermarkets from May.

At a meeting in Jersey yesterday, an agreement was reached on the Channel Island-wide initiative aimed at reducing their use – currently over 10 million bags a year in Guernsey alone.

Backed by both Environment departments, all major food retailers have agreed to introduce the charge from 6 May, with the money raised going to island charities. Speaking from Jersey yesterday afternoon, Environment minister David De Lisle said it was a great day.
