HERM schoolchildren packed their bags and went to London yesterday.

The three-day trip will include a visit to the Globe theatre where the pupils will take part in a workshop on Romeo and Juliet. Head teacher Mary Carey said that her eight pupils, aged from four to 10, had been learning about Shakespeare and his plays.

‘There has been a lot of talk about the need to introduce children to Shakespeare’s work much earlier than GCSE level,’ she said. ‘We have been doing just that. All of our pupils have been studying his plays at different levels and the response has been quite amazing.’

A parent accompanied each child. This reduced the requirements of the Education Department’s risk assessment plan, said Mrs Carey.

As well as the trip to the theatre, the children will have a tour of the city in an open top double-decker bus and see the stage performance of The Lion King.

The Knight family had made the trip a family affair. Jos and Richard accompanied sons William, 10, Charlie, 9, and Elliott, 6.

‘I’m the token male on this trip,’ said Mr Knight.

‘They needed a man because the party of children was mixed. We are quite privileged to be going as a complete family,’ he said.

Mrs Knight said that the children had been very excited and that Charlie and Elliott had got up at 5am on the day.

‘Elliott seems to be really enthusiastic about Romeo and Juliet and when he talks about it he gets quite upset about the ending. I find it quite amazing that children as young as him can get so passionate about it,’ she said.
