Environmentalist Vic Froome says the common’s litter problem shows that Mont Cuet’s refuse intake is not being covered daily. The landfill site’s licence has been changed to require covering only at weekends and when strong winds are forecast. (Picture by Peter Frankland, 0545115)
GUERNSEY’S landfill site at Mont Cuet is being mismanaged, according to an environmentalist.
Vic Froome said that was one reason why dozens of plastic bags were strewn around the Chouet headland and common area.
‘The States was told 10 years ago in no uncertain terms to clean up their act and cover the day’s intake with hardcore to stop problems such as this,’ he said.
‘That worked until some bright spark thought that they could prolong the life of the tip by not doing this. This is a serious mistake and does not amount to good practice.’ Mr Froome said he and his wife were appalled when they recently took a walk around the area.
