ST ANDREW’S School’s PTA has combined road safety with its campaign to save the school.

All 150 pupils and preschool children have been issued with reflective high- visibility vests which bear the message St Andrew’s Forever. These were organised by PTA member Rachel Bridle.

‘A total of 55% of pupils walk,’ she said. ‘It’s one of the things that makes it such a special community school. The PTA agreed that road- safety vests would be invaluable for the children as they travel to and from school and we decided to use the space on the back to remind everyone that we are determined to keep St Andrew’s open. We would like to thank David Rowe, from Industrial and Leisure Clothing, as he gave us a good deal.’

Pupils paraded the new vests yesterday lunchtime. They have proved a hit with them and their parents.

‘I think it’s a good idea,’ said eight-year-old Jodie Hicks.

‘I walk to school and I think we will be noticed as not many people wear them. I think they will keep me safe.’

Connor Harvey, 11, agreed with her.

‘I think it’s a good idea. With people riding a bike, the cars behind them can see them and people walking can be seen on the road. We will all be more visible.’

Jessica Bridle, 9, said she will wear hers when she walks to school.

‘I think it’s a good way to keep us safe and to keep our school open and I think it will encourage people to campaign more. My parents think it’s a good idea.’

PTA chairman Alasdair McLaren said that the campaign had achieved a high profile.

Activity will continue through the general election and beyond while teachers, parents and pupils await the Education Department’s recommendations on the provision of nursery education and the future of the school.
