TONY Blondel yesterday refused to rule himself out of the running for Guernsey football’s top job.
The sport’s rumour mill has been rife that he may have eyes on taking over at the helm after GFA chairman Dave Nussbaumer announced this week that he will quit the post.
Former Island manager Blondel was the GFA’s vice-president from 1993 to 2001. ‘I would not put myself forward, but if people wanted me to go back I would seriously consider it,’ he said.
‘I’m not saying please come to me and tell me to come back but if approached I would seriously consider it, but there is no guarantee that I would stand because I have not been nominated or officially approached.’
‘It’s flattering for people to think I could do that job,’ said Blondel.
Critics believe Guernsey football is at a crossroads and possibly the most important time in its long history as it considers changes to the biggest sport.
‘I don’t think the problems are insurmountable between the clubs and the GFA. If they can get together, possibly not in a public forum but smaller groups, problems can be sorted out for the betterment of football,’ he believes.
Blondel is full of admiration for the job Nussbaumer has done.
‘He took over at probably the most troubled times since the war and he has kept it together,’ he said.
‘I will have a good sit down with my wife, son and daughter and see what they feel. I would speak to them before making any decision,’ said Blondel.
GFA vice-chairman Jeff Vidamour has emerged as favourite to take over the helm in the last 48 hours but as he is away from the island he has been unable to make clear his intentions.
‘David Nussbaumer has announced he will not be standing for re-election. Therefore, at the AGM in June, the members will elect a new chairman, from the board of directors, for the forthcoming year,’ said the GFA’s commercial director James Blower.
‘At present the directors have not agreed on the date for the AGM, but they are required to give 50 days notice to the members of the date.’
