GUERNSEY’S tidal defences on the west coast cannot cope with the combination of high tides and stormy weather, warns Vazon Bay Cafe proprietor Nick Percy.
‘If the walls are damaged they will get worse. It will be better to spend money reinforcing them now. They know the areas that are dodgy, like Perelle, Albecq, Vazon, Cobo and the front,’ said Mr Percy.
‘If the tides are going to get higher and higher it stands to reason it will get worse – the walls do deteriorate, as everything does in time.’ He arrived at work yesterday at 8.30am. ‘I just missed the high tide but it made no difference because it was really rough,’ he said. ‘The tidal defences cannot cope.’

Hello i live right near vazon beach and the storm has been horrendous over the last few nights i have been going at high tide and there are millions of rocks everywere and sea weed piled up and the massive lake in the common there is more sea in the common than on the beach and there is more sand on the roads than the beach! it has been so bad and the winds are hurendous i have had no sleep because of the wind and everything blowing in the garden. we have had to put sandbags and because the wind is west it is even worse tonight is going to be really bad again like last night so me my mum and dad are going too see the sea at high tide tonight if we can get to the beach!!! we are under sea level so we would be flooded!!! the waves has been 40ft and have been going over the vazon kiosk! i just cannot get over the sand, sea shells, rocks and the seaweed it has took over the sea walls! Vazon is the worst beach struggling at the moment because it is a west wind and the tide is a 10.5 at the moment this is Sophie’s comment i am 14 reporting the storm at vazon thankyou
Hi
I’ve been keeping an eye on the storms hitting Guernsey from here in New Zealand. I used to visit the Island every year until we emmigrated to NZ in December 2006.
My thoughts are with all the Islanders and I wish you all well. Please be strong and help each other through these stormy times.
I’m sure Guernsey will come through this looking as beautiful as ever !!
Love and best wishes
John
I lived in the Perelle area back in the eighties and the sea flooding was pretty bad then but with global warming and rising sea levels heaven help th coastal dwellers in the future
