VAZON Bay Cafe was hit by a wave of destruction last week, this time from vandals. As if last week’s storm wasn’t enough for owner Nick Percy, his misery was compounded on the weekend after vandals smashed five reinforced windows at the property.
Between 6pm on Friday and 8.30am on Saturday, the windows at the front of the premises were smashed with pebbles and hit by a previously uprooted lifebelt pole from the bay. Although not pierced, the damage to the windows has amounted to £500.
‘It’s mindless vandalism once again but we haven’t had windows smashed like this before,’ said Mr Percy.
His message to the culprits was simply to ‘grow up’: ‘If you can’t handle the booze, don’t do it,’ he advised them.
Some beer cans and Stella Artois bottle tops had been found strewn outside the premises on Saturday morning.
‘They had been sitting out here – I think the security lights had been put out by the storm,’ said Mr Percy.
‘It was just criminal damage – they were not trying to break in,’ he believes.
But paying for the damage will have to come out of taxpayers’ pockets.
‘They are wasting money because the taxpayer has to fork out for damage to States buildings – it’s just stupid,’ said Mr Percy.
* Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to call them on 725111 or the confidential Crimestoppers line.
