TIGHTLY knit communities often excel at working together for a good cause – and it seems Alderney is no exception.

A spring fair in aid of the island’s Youth Travel Fund took place recently and, despite the fact that it lasted for just two hours, raised more than £1,000.

Generous locals baked cakes, sold refreshments and held a treasure hunt at the fund-raiser which took place at the Island Hall.

Alderney’s Rotary Club organised the event and its chair of community service, Ingrid Murdoch, told me she hopes it will now be held on a yearly basis.

‘Everyone is delighted the spring fair went so well. To raise more than £1,000 in a couple of hours is a great achievement and shows that people on the island do their best to get behind good causes.’

Ingrid’s right – people in Alderney are quick to support worthy causes and are not afraid to put their hands in their pockets.

Raising more than £1,000 is superb, no matter what charity is benefiting, but considering it was held in a tiny island with a limited catchment area, it is all the more remarkable.

I for one hope the spring fair will be held every year from now on because it’s vital our youngsters get the opportunity to spread their wings and find out what goes on away from the island. Also, the YTF concentrates on sporting activities, so our kids will not only be travelling, they’ll be keeping fit as well. Now that’s definitely worth backing.

Watch out for Jane Aireton and her Staffordshire cross, Trover, on ITV1’s new Sunday evening show, Lead Me Home, which begins this weekend.

This week’s programme will feature Trover’s extraordinary move from Manchester Dogs’ Home to Alderney, which took place in February.

Trover’s transfer to the island came about after ITV contacted Jane, who co-owns Trover Coats, to ask whether she’d like to donate some dog coats and blankets to the animal sanctuary.

Jane immediately sent some goods to the north-west of England and also said she’d be happy to rehome any dog that no one wanted. Soon afterwards she was told about Trover (then known as Harelip, for obvious reasons), which had arrived at the home as a stray in late 2007.

Arrangements for Trover’s move were quickly made and the lucky pooch arrived in Alderney to become the face of Jane’s business five weeks ago.

ITV1 has yet to confirm what time Lead Me Home will be aired but it should be shown between 4.30 and 6pm.

Finally, the Easter Bunny will be appearing on Alderney Railway on Sunday.

The Easter Egg Special will leave Braye Station at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm and every child who pitches up for a return journey will receive a chocolate egg to mark the occasion. Tickets will be available from 1.30pm.
