THE possible closure of St Andrew’s Primary School will be an election issue. Campaigners plan to canvass all candidates once nominations close.
‘We will be raising questions at the hustings and we will be noting those candidates who commit to supporting the school,’ said PTA chairman Alasdair McLaren. ‘We would expect the voting public to take an interest in who these candidates are.’
He added that it was Education, not the school, that had made it a campaign issue. ‘If they do not want this to be an election issue, they can commit to investing in the school for the future,’ said Mr McLaren.
There are other plans to raise the awareness of the campaign.
‘Although we would hope that the new board will have the courage to end this speculation and voice their long-term support for the school, we suspect that they will not and, as such, the campaign will be for the long term.’
The election was an opportunity for candidates to voice their support, he added.
‘We will obviously take great interest in whoever is appointed to the new Education board as it will be the new board which will make the decision on whether this is a proposal that needs to go to the States.’
