Castel junior constable Barry Paint surveys the damage to the gate across the Rue des Boulains end of Rue Paintain. (0557649)
‘It could have been a misjudgement or it could have been vandalism but it seems like someone came down the steep hill and didn’t take the turn in time and drove straight through the gate.
‘It must have been a big vehicle, though, and they must have been going quite fast because the gate is very strong.’
Mr Paint said police had taken away parts of the vehicle that are believed to have fallen off following the impact and added that blue paint had been left on the wood.
Douzenier Dave Chester took pictures of the destruction on Saturday morning and agrees with Mr Paint that it looks as if the damage might have been caused by a 4×4.
‘The indication of the tyre marks is that it travelled through the gates by about 20 feet and then reversed back through.’
The gate was originally put in when Rue Paintain was pedestrianised and the work was funded by the Co-op.
It also supplied a replacement six years ago when a similar incident took place.
Mr Paint said no decision had so far been taken on what to do this time.
‘Until the police carry out their inquiries, we will not really know and we will have to wait to see what the douzaine says at our next meeting.
‘It’s just a shame it has happened.’
* Police confirmed yesterday that their inquiries into the incident were continuing and they appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
