NORTH came from behind to defeat Bels 2-1 last night and lift the Guernsey FA Cup in front of more than 800 spectators at Foote’s Lane.

‘It’s fantastic – what a fantastic game of football from both teams and a great crowd,’ said a delighted North coach Mick Le Prevost afterwards.

‘I said before the game it’s all about chances and we took ours. Don’t forget Bels are Priaulx champions and they deserve to win the league, but we’ve now beaten them the last two times. It was a great game of football and it was nice to see so many people here. It could have gone either way to be fair.’

In an open game, full of chances, Bels took the lead through Marc McGrath just after the hour mark.

The chocolate-and-blues hit back shortly afterwards through Craig Young before Glyn Dyer hit a goal that he will remember for a long time to come.

The 19-year-old diminutive left-winger struck a low piledriver from 25 yards into the bottom of the goal.

It topped off a man-of-the-match performance for Dyer.

‘I’m very pleased, but I’m more pleased for the team,’ he said.

‘It’s a good buzz [scoring the winner]. I don’t know what to say. I’m just really pleased.’

Many are tipping Dyer to be in Guernsey coach Steve Ogier’s Muratti side.

But he is not letting the hype go to his head, pointing out that Dave Rihoy, who did not feature last night due to illness, is the current island left winger.

‘That’s getting a bit excited,’ he said.

‘I’ll keep trying and that, but Dave Rihoy is a class act.’

North captain Darren Martin was a happy man afterwards.

‘I’m totally delighted,’ said the midfielder.

‘It was brilliant. Everyone worked hard and it was a close game.’

However, he denied that the success made up for losing their league title to Bels.

‘The league is the number one priority, but it was important to get some silverware from the season and for our hard endeavour,’ he said.
