IT WAS standing room only as candidates in St Sampson’s faced the electorate last night.
The hustings at the secondary school marked the next stage in the election campaign as 13 people contest the district’s six seats.
They were grilled on issues ranging from the possible closure of St Sampson’s Infant School to energy policy and on which areas of States expenditure they would like to economise. Senior constable and returning officer Steve Park was chairing his first hustings and said everything went well.
‘There was a good audience and good questions answered pertinently,’ he said.
‘The candidates showed a fair degree of discipline. They overran occasionally, but that’s because they are not used to it.’
St Sampson’s and the West were the first districts to hold hustings.
‘We decided to hold it early because some people will be on holiday from Friday and may well be out of the island for two weeks because it’s Easter holidays. This way we don’t disenfranchise anyone from coming.’
Joining parishioners in the audience were people running in other districts who were keen to gauge the public mood.
Each candidate opened up with a three-minute introductory speech before being allowed one minute to answer each question from the floor.
