CHRIS LAW proved he is no longer a rookie as he secured a 10th place finish in the 2008 Renault Clio Cup Champion-ship opener at Brands Hatch at the weekend.

The 17-year-old local racing star had come 16th in the first race on Saturday before he got his top-10 finish the next day.

It is the Elizabeth College student’s second season in the championship. ‘It’s a lot less hassle at the front – there seems to be more respect,’ said Law. ‘Now I’m close to the front, it’s where I want to stay.’

Saturday’s race was held in challenging wet conditions at the famous Kent circuit.

Law was forced to change tyres and that compromised his track position.

However, until the last two laps of the race, his was the fastest car on the track.

As a result of the tyre change, he crossed the finishing line in 16th.

In Sunday’s race, the Sarnian showed how much he has matured as a driver.

He had a great start and maintained position with the front-runners to ensure he came 10th.

His father, William, was delighted with the results and hoped they would encourage financial interest.

‘Today we have demonstrated that Chris is a gifted driver and we hope that the higher-position finishes encourage sponsors to join us this season,’ he said.

‘The team has a lot to offer in terms of corporate hospitality and branding.’

Sunday’s race was shown live on ITV4 and Law’s car stood out from the field as its roof has been decorated with the Guernsey flag.

‘I’m very pleased to be flying the flag for Guernsey, especially as the race was live on ITV4,’ he said.

The championship’s next round is at Rockingham Motor Speedway on 12 and 13 April.
