May sports seminars to focus on the inner game

0555773.jpgA LEADING authority in the mental game of sport will be running two inspirational seminars next month for aspiring young local sports people and their mentors.

Mind coach and ex-international basketball player Jamie Edwards, pictured, has been invited to Guernsey by OSA Recruitment to run two consecutive evening seminars at St James.

Edwards is an established and highly recognised sports psychologist who has helped numerous international sports personalities such as Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood, Paul McGinley, Michael Vaughan, Andrew Flintoff and Lewis Moody as well as elite extreme sport athletes and Premier League footballers. The first seminar on Tuesday 13 May at 7pm is entitled ‘Raise Ya Game: How to Win the Game of Life’.

This free interactive workshop is specifically for young adults involved in sport from Year 7 upwards.

It will show them how to think differently to achieve success. Using brain-training tools Mr Edwards aims to help people overcome beliefs that are limiting them.

The second seminar on Wednesday 14 May at 7pm, called ‘The Winning Parent’, invites the mentors of the young adults, whether they are their teachers, coaches or parents.

The course aims to help them understand the young adults’ mind and how they think, before sharing fundamental principles of creating a winning mindset.

‘Focusing on techniques and fitness is just two sides of the triangle,’ said Edwards.

‘The third side is all to do with the mind and it is only when all three are working together that an individual can begin to develop unshakeable self-confidence and achieve their goals.

‘To get the most out of these seminars, it is important that both the youngsters as well as their mentors attend as there is a very strong connection between the two.’

The sponsors and organisers, OSA Recruitment, has liaised closely with the Education Department, the Sports Commission, sports associations as well as secondary schools to ensure that as many individuals within the sports arena in the island have the opportunity to attend these brain-training seminars.

Alun Williams, Guernsey’s lifelong learning manager, said: ‘Jamie is a recognised leading practitioner in this challenging field and we are confident that these seminars will generate debate and support the efforts of our island’s sports community.’
