Matron ‘has gone unpunished’ over assault in a bar

ALDERNEY hospital workers claim that a matron who assaulted a colleague in a bar is continuing to harass and intimidate the woman.

Staff at the Mignot Memorial Hospital expressed their concern after matron Mary Sumner was cautioned by police for assaulting secretary Jane Macfarlane on 8 March. They claim the assault followed several months of harassment and say their employer, the Health and Social Services Department, has failed to punish Mrs Sumner for her actions and ease their fears over Mrs Macfarlane’s safety.

The workers’ statement read: ‘We are very unhappy as we feel her [the matron’s] position within our caring profession has been compromised.

‘She [Mrs Sumner] has shown absolutely no remorse and seems to find the situation very amusing. She has also continued her aggression since the incident.

‘This we find appalling, especially as our fears have not been supported by our employer. We are highlighting this incident as we feel the matron has got away without any punishment.’

Both Mrs Sumner and Mrs Macfarlane declined to comment.

An HSSD spokesman said: ‘We are aware of the situation at the MMH and it is incorrect to say that nothing has been done to address issues arising out of it.

‘Clearly this is a difficult situation but steps are being taken to ensure the smooth running of the MMH, protect the interests of staff and maintain its reputation.

‘It would be inappropriate to make any comment to the media regarding action being taken by senior management to resolve this issue.’

A police spokesman confirmed Mrs Sumner had received a formal caution for assault.

Alderney States member with responsibility for health and social services

Liz Bennett said it was not States policy to comment publicly on personnel matters.

‘However, as this issue has been brought to the public’s attention, I will discuss it with the Health and Social Services Department,’ she said.
