A FOOD retailer yesterday took another step in the campaign to reduce plastic bag use.

The Marks & Spencer Simply Food franchises will be giving away a bag for life with most transactions until 6 May, when the bigger supermarkets begin charging 5p for a standard carrier.

The bags for life are made from 100% recycled plastic and shoppers are being asked to reuse them. Worn out bags can be returned to the stores where they will be exchanged free of charge.

One customer praised the initiative.

‘I think it’s a brilliant idea and it’s nice to see one of our leading food outlets setting such a good example,’ said former harbour master Captain Robert Barton.

Proceeds from the forthcoming 5p charge on standard carriers will be used to fund local environmental projects and charities and M&S is inviting its customers to put forward ideas.

‘We believe this could encompass anything from green-lung projects to initiatives that encourage people to make greener and healthier lifestyle choices,’ said local M&S franchise director Ian McLaughlin.
