IAN POWELL and Tom Hollingsworth came fourth and eighth respectively in the 200m butterfly final at the British Championships yesterday.

Their Beau Sejour Barracudas coach, Alison Frankland, was at Pond’s Forge, Sheffield, to watch them.

‘It was very interesting to see two Guernsey boys in the final and they announced that there were two Channel Islanders in the pool,’ she said. ‘I was very proud that they were there. They were flying the flag for Guernsey.

‘Fourth placed was disappointing for Ian.

‘He swam very well and Tom did really well as well.’

Swimming in the Olympic- size pool, Florida State University’s Powell competing under the Barracudas banner had set a time of 1min. 59.78sec. in the heats to qualify third.

The time also broke Hollingsworth’s island record.

He then went on to clock 2-00.96 in the final.

Powell was also wearing the new Speedo LZR Racer suit that is revolutionising the sport.

Fellow Sarnian Hollingsworth had also worn the suit in the final of the 100m butterfly but he had problems with it as he set a disappointing time of 56.30.

In his old suit, Hollingsworth, who was swimming for University of East Anglia, finished in 2-01.66 in yesterday’s 200m final.

He had qualified for it in sixth place after he set 2-01.16 in the heats. Both missed out on the qualifying time of 1-57.67 for the Beijing Olympics.

Frankland thought the pair had done exceedingly well.

‘I was very impressed with the both of them,’ she said.

‘To place fourth and eighth in Great Britain is amazing.’
