ALISON MERRIEN strolled to the top of section two after just one embarrassingly one-sided qualifying group match at the 2008 World Cup in Warilla, New South Wales.
The Guernsey star, pictured, walloped Portugal’s Mary Banks 25-0, 20-1 for a plus 44 shots difference at the end of day one.
Ian Merrien, Alison’s husband, had an up and down opening day, with an easy win over Portugal’s Stewart Banks before losing to the Aussie-based Maltese player, Shaun Parnis.
Banks was swept aside 12-3, 14-5, but it was a different story against Parnis and after drawing the opening set 11-11, Merrien went down 13-5 in the second as Parnis peppered the jack throughout.
It could have been worse for Ian.
In the opening set he trailed 6-11 with two ends remaining, but a three and a two salvaged a draw.
Both Merriens face nine round-robin group games in an attempt to qualify for the straight knockout stage.
And while she may have started well, Alison will be wary of complacency in a group which contains the Australian, New Zealand and South African representatives.
Jersey has sent just one player to the event, female player Chris Grimes.
