SOME 270 people turned out for the second hustings in the West yesterday evening.
Returning office Peter Bott said the interest justified the decision to hold hustings on consecutive Wednesdays at La Houguette School.
‘I spoke to Richard Heaume who organised it [on one evening] four years ago and he said people had had trouble getting in,’ he said. ‘I wrote to the four douzaines and all were in favour of the two nights. We must have had about 500 people over the two weeks.’
Two of the 12 candidates were absent. Mimi Byrom had a prior engagement while Nara Le Noury’s seat was empty for the second week running.
Only one question, on capital spending priorities, was repeated from the previous week.
The Rev. Linda Le Vasseur wanted know what candidates would do to help old people on fixed incomes. Virtually all said they would increase the States pension, but none said where the money to fund that would come from.
Joy Gardner said she had a vague idea who she would be voting for prior to the meeting, but she had changed her mind slightly by the end of it.
‘They said what they stood for and what they would like to see happen, but the crux is how things would be brought about,’ she said.
‘There were some nice ideas, but it will be interesting to see how they put them into practice.’
Banker Antoinette Walters said it had been worth attending.
‘It’s helped me in determining who I will vote for,’ she said.
‘There were some people who I didn’t know at all and it’s helped me to see what they are like.’
