TWO wins out of two had Ali Merrien sitting on top of her section table yesterday in the World Cup.
The Sarnian star enjoyed another comfortable victory in Warilla, New South Wales, as she saw off Da-Hye Park of Korea 24-1, 14-5.
Merrien, who has dropped only seven shots in her opening two matches, admitted that there are harder games to come.
‘The Korean is a youngster who is inexperienced at this level,’ said Merrien.
‘Unfortunately, it was one-way traffic, but it is unlikely to be the same [today] playing Val Smith from New Zealand, who recently took the outdoor World Championship singles.’
Merrien’s husband Ian found the going tougher.
He lost 11-4, 11-5 against Ali Forsyth from New Zealand, who is expected to qualify for the knockout stages so it was always going to be a hard game.
‘The scoreline flattered the New Zealander a little, but he deserved to win, being a bit more consistent,’ said Ali.
‘The second set could have gone either way, but, as so often proves to be the case, when you are down, the rubs go against you.’
With six matches left, though, Ian still has plenty to play for, having won one of his first three.
