News from the Guernsey Press

Savings club agent escapes jail.

The customers were expecting shopping vouchers in return for the money they had paid her.

She remained adamant that she paid it into her savings account, but had thrown away the only evidence – the paying in book.

At her trial, Brehaut could not give an explanation as to the whereabouts of the missing money.
In an interview with police, she blamed banking errors.
She claimed that she and her daughter had also lost out.

Advocate Chris Green said that his client had an unblemished character.

He told the court that her youngest children, aged 10 and 15, would suffer if their mother was sent to prison.

At the time of the offences, Brehaut was in a dire financial position.
Mr Robey said that there had been overwhelming evidence against her and that her guilt was obvious. He said that he could not understand why she had felt it necessary to continue her charade.
