Farish talks up chances

‘I’M EXPECTING both sides to be way too strong for Jersey this year.’

That’s the message from the island’s under-21s and under-17s coach Adam Farish as he named his age-group squads ahead of this Saturday’s inter-insulars in Jersey.

Despite putting in a lacklustre performance in their league defeat at the hands of Collins Stewart Inferno on Friday night, Farish says he and his number two, Dave Wilson, have been impressed with the under-21s in this year’s Yorkshire Guernsey Division One. The new caps are the combative Chris Simon, Aivars Pilmanis and Tenzin Dakar.

Point guard Dakar has been a real find this season for the under-21s and Inferno.

Jason Hooper, who is a member of the senior island squad, captains the side.

‘The under-21s led by Hooper, [Aaron] Walden, [Scott] Rowe and [Dan] Marriott have been awesome this year,’ said Farish.

‘They are real upset makers in Division One and have several players challenging for full island spots. There is no weak link and no vulnerability anywhere on the floor.

‘We have two players for every spot and selecting the 12 was no easy task. I truly believe the under-21s are the best prepared, most cohesive and most ruthless team in Channel Islands basketball right now.’

The new caps in the under-17s are James Ashplant, Max Hunter, Lorrie West, Matt McKenna, Luke Vaudin and Calum Le Moigne.

‘The under-17s have some massive players looking to put on a show in their final year,’ said Farish.

‘Max Hamon has been exceptional for the under-21s all year and I’m sure he’ll lead his team to victory. Larry Lord has come through as great point guard and a senior island player of the future.

‘A load of new caps means a new approach and some fresh energy in the side. If all goes well it could be a demolition job this year.’

Both teams beat Jersey in 2007.
