AFTER three consecutive years in which the Sark AC women have stolen the limelight to win the overall championship, Glyn Williams has restored the men’s supremacy by winning the title for the 2007/8 season.
He was presented with the overall and men’s championship trophies at the club’s annual dinner and presentation night held at Stambles restaurant.
The women’s championship cup went to Liz Dewe, while the junior top award was won by Jason Brehaut who took the cup for the third consecutive time.
The top non-member award went to Colin Smith. The Bream Cup went to Phil Mason for a 3-5-0 black bream, while the wrasse award went to Darren Dewe for a 3-13-0 fish.
The Select Decor Shield for the heaviest grey mullet was won by Liz Dewe for a 5-2-0 specimen. She has become the club’s undisputed mullet champion for this was the fourth consecutive time she had won this award.
Williams added to his list of awards by taking the conger trophy for a 40-0-0 specimen.
Leon Collenette won the heaviest fish by a junior trophy for a 5-1-0 pollack.
The club has wasted no time in getting their 2008-9 season underway for they have already fished their first competition. The seven-hour roving shore event attracted seven members and all found fish.
The winner was Liz Dewe with 13 black bream and a 3-10-0 grey mullet for a total weight of 15-12-0 and 86 points.
The total catch consisted of 47 black bream, one grey mullet, one three-bearded rockling and four pollack.
The surprise of the day was the number of black bream. In spite of the fishing being below par generally, they are continuing to give good sport on a few selected shore marks.
In Guernsey this applies to spots on the north coast, while in Sark it’s Maseline Harbour.
The only disappointment: they are small fish, averaging just under one pound in weight.
This was borne out by Williams who had 14 for 13-2-0 to finish in second place and Darren Dewe, who landed nine for 8-7-0 to finish third.
n IT’S amazing how many prizes can be won by one good fish.
At the Bailiwick Bass Club’s annual dinner and presentation night held at Les Rocquettes Hotel, Caroline Froome picked up five for one bass.
Her 11-10-1 specimen gave her the North Quay Marine Boat Championship Shield, the Boat Pairs Championship along with her husband Tim, the Stamford Bridge (Roy Hockey) Memorial Trophy for the heaviest boat-caught bass, the Mark McLean Trophy for the best bass in Ball Challenge and the June 2007 monthly prize.
Those are in addition to other awards won previously in the Bass Challenge.
All the awards were presented to the winners by Trevor Page from Quayside Marine.
Other top awards were: Mark Fletcher, shore champion, Jason Brouard and Ben Mahy, shore pairs champions, Jason Crittell, junior shore champion and Julie Crittell, women’s champion.
Steve Huxster won the award for the heaviest shore bass, a 12-6-11 fish, while the Herm prize went to Solvita Priede.
The club has already started their new season, with Andrew Brown taking an early lead in the shore championship.
During March, the first month in the club year, he caught bass of 6-5-3, 5-7-8 and 4-10-11 for a total of 16-10-6.
Daryl Butcher is in second spot landing fish of 8-6-12 and 5-6-0 for a 13-12-12 total.
The Collenette Jones heaviest bass of the month award went to Shane Bentley for his 11-3-1 specimen, which gave him third place.
Mark Fletcher had an 8-1-2 fish to be in fourth spot, while Mick Damarell completed the catches with a 4-15-6 fish.
n MARCH was a good month for the Guernsey Mullet Club for its members weighed in no fewer than 24 fish.
The catch list was easily topped by Sam Robins, who landed seven for 29-12-0, which included the heaviest of the month a 6-10-0 specimen.
Two members landed five each, Paul Carre’s weighing a total of 21-6-4 and Peter Frise’s 17-4-10.
Tim Cotterill only had one mullet but it was the 6-4-7 specimen, which was the winning fish in the club’s recent Open Festival.
It has put Cotterill into a narrow lead at the head of the championship list, which is decided on the member’s top fish of each month.
Two anglers had identical catches. Mike Weysom and Gary Le Poidevin each had two mullet for a total weight of 5-14-0.
Andy Le Lerre had a 4-5-0 fish, and Tim Froome completed the catches with one of 3-7-0.
