Bridget’s name remembered

ORCHID fields in St Peter’s have been renamed after local botanist Bridget Ozanne, who died last summer. The fields at Les Vicheries were unveiled as the Bridget Ozanne Orchid Fields at a ceremony attended by friends and family.

Mrs Ozanne was botany secretary for La Societe Guernesiaise and for 10 years had given guided tours through the fields, which contain some of the rarest orchids in the British Isles.

La Societe conservation officer Jamie Hooper said the decision to rename the fields in Mrs Ozanne’s memory had been made by its council.

The ceremony took place on what would have been her 55th birthday.

‘It was done really because throughout her life she had been dedicated to nature and to pursuing knowledge about it.

She wanted to encourage other people to get involved, too,’ he said. She used to love taking guided tours through the fields and these were particularly well attended because these fields are unique to Guernsey.’
