ELECTION DAY got off to a slow start, with only five people queuing at the St Peter Port South polling station before the doors opened at eight. Allister Langlois was the first to cast his vote as an elector and candidate.
‘I think it’s going to be a busy day. I like to be an early person. I’ve already been for my morning swim so I might as well get it out of the way. It is not a big decision who I am voting for as I am a candidate. I was expecting there to be a few more people than this.’
Maurice Johnson, 58, was second in line. ‘I thought I would be one of the first ones to get here. It was one of my ambitions. I didn’t think I would be all alone. I’ve got my top five and my sixth is split between a man and a woman. I went to the hustings last week which helped me decide who I was voting for. I was expecting more people than this today.’
Timothy Hibbs was also in line. The 65-year-old shop assistant came to vote before he went to work. He says: ‘I made my decision and I was expecting more people than this. I thought it would be a fair turnout. Not a great turnout as people are so fed up with politics.’
